Bicycle Portraits
This post combines two of my favorite things. Bikes, and photography.
Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Groble are two friends adventuring through South Africa, on bicycles, looking for and meeting people who share the same passions they have about biking. They capture their experiences with these people through photographs. The photographs, along with the short stories told by the individuals give us a tiny glimpse into the diverse lives they live. Put simply, Stan and Nic are making friends and learning from others all while riding their bikes.
South Africa is a microcosm of the larger world, home to many different cultures, social classes and laced tragedy and victory. Racism is deeply rooted, and segregation is still present today. Stan and Nic's bike project aims to connect people who otherwise wouldn't be connected, through an ordinary and simple object- the bicycle. They are trying to knit people, of all walks, races and classes together through a common love. I find that simply beautiful, and honorable. It's easy sometimes to forget that we aren't all that different. It's easy to forget that no one is greater than another.

Sugar Rush
This weekend my friend, Alyssa and I threw a birthday party for ourselves. It was Candy Land themed, and it was magical.

My brother and I
I love my best friends
I also love sugar
Erik and Taylor made cotton candy for everyone!
Emily and Jilli made ALL the treats. They are amazingly talented.
He's the greatest.
Jilli and I in the midst of a sugar high. Those lollipops didn't leave our hands all night.
Thanks everyone for coming! You're the sweetest. (Good pun right?)

Cinnamon rolls
"Mom, I'm making cinnamon rolls. Want some?"
"No, I don't really like cinnamon rolls."
"Yeah, I don't either... but I had this craving... and Jilli sad these were REALLY good.
I made 2 pans... and my mother and I polished off every single one of them.

The world is forever creative
Art calls for physical as well as emotional and intellectual effort. And so does work. We shall never lose the need to use our physical bodies to create art, no matter how clever computers become. If our brains, eyes, and hands are ever supplanted by machines, we shall have to hire machines to eat and sleep and make love. Then humanity will be obsolete.Edmund Burke Feldman except from Art & Work, “A Sermon on Work, Language, and Values”

This is my brain
I think I'm a little bit (very much) right brained... What are you?
“I am the left brain. I am a scientist. A mathematician. I love the familiar. I categorize. I am accurate. Linear. Analytical. Strategic. I am practical. Always in control. A master of words and language. Realistic. I calculate equations and play with numbers. I am order. I am logic. I know exactly who I am.”
“I am the right brain. I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion. Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter. I am taste. The feeling of sand beneath bare feat. I am movement. Vivid colors. I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas. I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel. I am everything I wanted to be.”
